This early morning in late midwinter, the vista from my window presents a grand horizon of light and dark. The city skyline, veiled in shadow, the upper air, shrouded in cloud, and midway, the chasm of peach dawn radiance, beckoning from east, suffusing all west.
If I liken the scene to the self, the black enshrouded city is like body and it’s ground. So much goes on in the unity of the living body-mind that does so beneath and beyond the reflection of the waking mind.
Therefore, the ground of this latter – the body-mind complex and it’s own ground, including it’s environment – is an unknown, darkness covered place. To the waking mind it’s own ground may seem like an ‘other’.
Similarly, the darkness of the upper sky is like the world perceived by the waking mind as another other. The exuberance of the morning light between the darknesses is that aspect of Being which is the waking mind. The mind that, in accordance with the impulsions and conflicts of embodied living, treats the world as something outside of itself even though this ‘outer’ world shares with the ‘inner’ a common ground, which is the true identity.
Ego would be this light taking itself alone to be the true identity. But the real self unfolds as the integration of light and dark, world, mind, being, time, all this and these which are themselves simply abstracted aspects from the living vastness that is itself.
And now, a very, very happy Christmas to you all! (I refuse to say y’all because despite pretentions, I am still given to being an unreconstructed reactionary crank about some petty things; trendy internet newspeak being one of them!)
Season's Blessings Ross to you and your loved ones 🤍🕊
