This Deity
piece
“If you have ever come on a dense wood of ancient trees that have risen to an exceptional height, shutting out all sight of the sky with one thick screen of branches upon another, the loftiness of the forest, the seclusion of the spot, your sense of wonderment at finding so deep and unbroken a gloom out of doors, will persuade you of the presence of a deity”- from Letter XLI of Seneca
THIS DEITY
There seems a place, set deep in gloom,
when roll the banks of fog aside,
those teeming vapours, time’s perfume,
that rank enfolding, clog the mind
***
A still uncharted crystal spring,
through mist and strife, beyond a door,
from far below, on whispered wings,
this will to life and bondage soars

The reference to ancient trees brought to mind where I live. It is on the doorstep of a range of hills much of it still in a natural state. It was, once, dominated by ancient massive trees called kauri. Unfortunately a disease took hold killing many of them. I can stand on my deck and see the skeletons across the valley. Such is life in a modern world.
Love it! ❤️❤️❤️
The end line neatly ties it all up!
